Keeping the Peace

Keeping the Peace

What does it mean to 'Keep the Peace' as a cop in a world where cops are the enemy?

Now, that's not nearly as far-fetched as I would've thought when I was a little girl and my favorite TV shows were almost all cop shows. Law & Order (all three versions!), CSI, CSI: Miami, Criminal Intent, JAG, NCIS ~ oh, our family primetime list was full of crime dramas when I was a kid. To little-girl me, the idea of anyone other than The Bad Guys (tm) hating law enforcement was quite alien.

And yet, in Albion, that's exactly the scenario that Sergeant Greg Ryder and Télnis Aonan face every single day. They are the magical aristocracy's frontline oppressors against ordinary, non-magical citizens. They know it. The citizens know it. And the citizens hate every single Enforcer for it.

Which makes it darned tough for those Enforcer-cops who take their duty to 'Protect and Serve' seriously. Sadly, many of them become jaded from all the hate and disdain, giving up and becoming part of the problem.

Not Greg.

It's not that he's a saint ~ as a divorced, ten-years-sober alcoholic, he's about as far from perfect as he thinks it's possible to be.

But Greg knows what it's like to lose people. He knows what it's like to lose family and face the darkest moments of life with no one to turn to. And he's decided that if he can help just one person avoid that darkness, if he can bring everyone (even the criminals!) home alive, then all the pain in his own past was worth it.

So he's made 'Keeping the Peace' his mantra. His reason to get up each morning and do the best he can in a job that represents oppression to every civilian he meets.

And his télnis?

To them, he's the one superior they can trust, the guy who puts himself on the line right alongside them. The sergeant who fights like heck to bring them home safe each and every day. And they're not about to let him down, no matter how much the civilians jeer and sneer.

Is it easy for them?

Heck, no, they're the heroes and that means it's my authorly duty to whump 'em as hard as possible. 😋

But at the end of the day, Greg and Télnis Aonan are good cops in a rough world, just tryin' their best to make a difference. And that makes them interesting (to me, at least).

So what about you?

What outlandish scenario would you love to see your favorite TV show characters in?

'Cause I think everyone has a little bit of fanfic in their soul, if we only dare to wonder.

Until next time, Keep the Peace!

Going Out Your Door "It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door. You step onto the Road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to." ~ Bilbo, The Fellowship of the Ring This is the month. The month when The Light of Arunzi goes live, the month where my book 'steps out the door' and onto the Road. But it certainly didn't begin here, now did it? But let's back up a bit before I get too far ahead of myself. 😉 One of my favorite book...

Driving in the Rain Rain is an odd thing, at times. Most of the time, you can see it coming from a mile away, with plenty of time to get under cover. Even if it springs on us unexpectedly, we can often run between the raindrops till we get to shelter. But then there's the times rain shows up when we weren't expecting it at all. A nice, warm sunny day - and all of a sudden, there's rain. I remember, when I was a kid, it was a warm summer day. Plenty of sunshine and just right for a good day at...
